The brief

A useful app built on open data

Each team picks an activity it cares about and builds an app that uses open data. A data viewer or a basic CRUD is not the goal: features and cross-cutting aspects are critical, and new, creative concepts in the conceptual model are valued.

The starting proposals

It is not a closed list: you can propose another by emailing the teachers with the title, the dataset link, its quality and how often it is updated. Within one lab group a brief cannot be repeated (first come, first served).

1

Cultural agenda

Following the main cultural activities across Catalonia.

2

Sustainable mobility

Promoting electric vehicles (charging points) and Bicing.

3

Energy

Energy certificates of buildings, to promote responsible energy use.

4

Air quality

Avoiding exposure where pollution is temporarily higher.

5

Weather (XEMA)

Variables from the Catalan network of automatic weather stations.

Dataset quality

Inception 1 asks you to describe the dataset quality. Check:

How to go beyond CRUD

Open data is the starting point, not the product. Ask yourselves what the user does with it:

  • Decides: recommendations, personalised alerts, comparisons.
  • Plans: routes, synced calendars, reminders.
  • Shares: ratings, chat, community, challenges.
  • Contributes: reports errors, adds their own data, moderates.

Each verb brings new concepts into the model (Route, Alert, Challenge, Rating...) and cross-cutting aspects that add ambition. See the conceptual model example.

In inception 1 the general project concept must include the dataset quality and the new concepts or requirements the team defines.
